Ranchi: CPI(ML) General Secretary Dipankar Bhattacharya said that strengthening opposition unity is the need of the hour to defeat fascist forces in the country. He announced that CPI(ML) legislators in Jharkhand would vote in favor of the INDIA alliance candidates in the upcoming Rajya Sabha elections for two seats in the state and expressed confidence that the alliance would secure victory.
Addressing a press conference after the two-day State Committee meeting of CPI(ML) held at HEC Guest House, Hatia, on June 13-14, Bhattacharya raised concerns over the Election Commission’s Special Intensive Revision (SIR) drive. He alleged that the exercise was leading to the deletion of a large number of voters, particularly among the poor, Dalits, migrant workers and Muslims. He claimed that reports indicated nearly 1.40 lakh voters had been removed from the electoral rolls in the Bagodar Assembly constituency alone. He said the party would launch a statewide “Save the Vote” campaign to safeguard democratic rights.
Bhattacharya also voiced support for ongoing student and youth protests against alleged irregularities, corruption and paper leaks in examinations such as NEET, CUET, CBSE and SSC. He demanded the dissolution of the National Testing Agency (NTA) and the establishment of a fair, transparent and credible examination system. He further called for the resignation of the Union Education Minister.
Referring to alleged electoral irregularities in West Bengal and other states, Bhattacharya said attempts to deprive citizens of their voting rights posed a serious threat to democratic institutions and the electoral process. He described the situation as unprecedented in the history of Indian democracy.
Expressing concern over the country’s economic condition, he said a weakening rupee, rising inflation, unemployment and pro-corporate economic policies were increasing hardships for ordinary citizens. He opposed privatization and cuts in public expenditure, calling instead for greater public investment, employment security, inflation control and policies aimed at improving the incomes of workers, farmers and common people.
The State Committee meeting resolved to launch a nationwide campaign from July 16 through August against inflation, unemployment and poverty. The campaign will be carried out under slogans such as “Control Prices, Provide Jobs,” “Ensure Living Wages,” “Down with Bulldozer Rule,” “Restore Voting Rights to All Indians,” and “Stop Detaining Citizens.”
During the meeting, hundreds of people associated with the Khunti and Godalpura movements joined CPI(ML) in the presence of the party’s General Secretary. Party leaders said efforts would be intensified to strengthen the farmers’ movement in Godalpura and ongoing struggles in the Khunti region.
The press conference was also attended by CPI(ML) Jharkhand State Secretary Manoj Bhakt, Polit Bureau member Haldhar Mahto, and party legislators Aroop Chatterjee and Chandradev Mahto.
