Ranchi: Communist Party of India (Marxist) state secretary Prakash Vipluv said that any reduction in the number of seats reserved for Scheduled Tribes (STs) and Scheduled Castes (SCs) during the delimitation process would not be acceptable. He said the CPI(M) supports the demand of tribal organisations that the number of reserved seats should not be reduced from the existing level.
Vipluv said the party would strongly oppose any attempt to reduce the percentage of seats reserved for tribals in the name of population ratio or to weaken their social, political and cultural identity.
He recalled that due to strong opposition from the CPI(M) and other political parties on the issue, the delimitation exercise in Jharkhand was suspended in 2006. He said Jharkhand comes under the Fifth Schedule of the Constitution and the continuous decline in the tribal population in the state is a matter of serious concern.
The CPI(M) state secretary urged the Central Government and the Delimitation Commission to take Jharkhand’s distinct social and constitutional status into consideration while undertaking the delimitation exercise. He also called upon the authorities to take into account the possible discontent that could arise in the state if the percentage or number of seats reserved for tribals and Dalits is reduced.
He said necessary steps must be taken to ensure that the constitutional safeguards and political representation guaranteed to tribals and Dalits are not weakened under any circumstances.
