Surprise inspections carried out at sweet shops and food stalls in Koderma; Action taken for unhygienic conditions and use of harmful colors
Ranchi (Koderma):Ahead of the Diwali festival, the Food Safety Department conducted surprise inspections of sweet shops and food stalls in Jhumri Telaiya’s Station Road area to ensure food quality and hygiene.
The inspection was carried out late Wednesday evening under the direction of the Deputy Commissioner by Food Safety Officer Abhishek Anand and District COTPA Consultant Dipesh Kumar. The team inspected several establishments, including Apsara Restaurant, Shagun Sweets, Ajanta Sweets, Menka Hotel, Shivam Sweets, Tandoor Plaza, Dwarika Fast Food, and various chaat stalls and roadside vendors.
During the inspection, unhygienic conditions were found at Ajanta Sweets, leading to the destruction of all sweets stored there. The establishment was issued a notice for further legal action. In another case, a chaat vendor was found using non-edible coloring in chickpeas, and the adulterated food was destroyed on the spot. Additionally, a fine of ₹200 was imposed on one shop for violating COTPA regulations.
The team instructed all hotels, restaurants, dhaba operators, food vendors, packaged water sellers, retailers, and wholesalers to obtain valid FSSAI food licenses and strictly maintain cleanliness, hygiene, and food quality standards. They were also directed to immediately dispose of any expired, stale, or spoiled food items.
Officials emphasized that only FSSAI-certified food colors should be used and strictly within permissible limits. Chaat, golgappa, and spice vendors were specifically warned not to use banned non-edible colors, commonly known as pudiya color, samrat color, gaay chaap color, or jalebi color.
Furthermore, packaged food sellers were instructed to ensure that all products clearly display the FSSAI license number, manufacturing date, expiry date, and complete manufacturer’s address on their labels.
The Food Safety Department stated that such surprise inspections will continue in the coming days to ensure that consumers receive safe and quality food. Officials also warned that strict legal action will be taken against any food business found violating safety and hygiene regulations.
