Shared Responsibility and Modern Technology Will Strengthen Jharkhand’s Agriculture Sector: Hemant Soren

Ranchi::Jharkhand Chief Minister Hemant Soren on Tuesday said that the state government and farmers must work together to strengthen the agricultural sector and improve farmers’ livelihoods. He emphasized that while the government is fulfilling its responsibilities, farmers must also adopt modern agricultural practices, focus on water conservation, and promote organic farming.

The Chief Minister was addressing the inaugural ceremony of the Jharkhand Agriculture Product and Trade Fair-2026 at Morabadi Ground in Ranchi. On the occasion, he provided financial assistance on a 100 percent subsidy basis for the construction of sheds for four milch animals to

Tana Bhagat families. He also honored outstanding farmers with certificates, distributed appointment letters to Veterinary Doctors and Attendants in district agriculture offices, and handed over Digital AI Kits to 209 beneficiaries.

Addressing the gathering, Soren said that nearly 80 percent of Jharkhand’s population depends on agriculture for livelihood. However, climate change has emerged as a major challenge for the farming community. He stressed the need for water conservation and urged farmers to create water-harvesting structures in their fields to ensure sustainable agriculture in the future.

The Chief Minister also highlighted the importance of maintaining a balance between development and environmental conservation. He expressed concern over large-scale deforestation in the name of industrialization and infrastructure development and warned that unchecked exploitation of natural resources could lead to severe water scarcity in the coming years.

Appealing to farmers to adopt organic farming practices, Soren said excessive use of chemical fertilizers and pesticides poses serious risks to human health and soil fertility. He informed that the state government is working towards creating a supportive ecosystem for organic agriculture.

Referring to the Birsa Harit Gram Yojana, the Chief Minister said the scheme has started yielding encouraging results. He cited the example of mangoes produced by women associated with JSLPS in Simdega, which are now being exported to London, demonstrating the growing global recognition of Jharkhand’s agricultural produce. He added that fruit-bearing trees have been planted on nearly 1.5 lakh acres of barren land under the scheme.

Soren directed the Agriculture Department to map progressive farmers across the state and recognize outstanding performers through the proposed ‘Mukhyamantri Samman’ initiative. He said deserving farmers would also receive financial assistance and technological support to enhance productivity.

The Chief Minister further instructed officials to develop a dedicated digital portal for farmers, enabling them to submit queries, suggestions, and grievances and receive timely solutions from government departments and agricultural experts.

The three-day fair, being held from June 16 to 18 at Morabadi Ground, has brought together progressive farmers, agricultural scientists, and stakeholders from across the country. Around 200 stalls have been set up to showcase innovations, technologies, and government schemes related to agriculture and allied sectors.

The event was attended by Minister Dr. Irfan Ansari, Minister Deepika Pandey Singh, Minister Shilpi Neha Tirkey, Rajya Sabha MP Mahua Maji, MLA Suresh Kumar Baitha, Vice-Chancellor of Birsa Agricultural University Dr. S.C. Dubey, Chairman of the Gau Seva Aayog Rajeev Ranjan Prasad, Agriculture, Animal Husbandry and Cooperation Department Secretary Abu Bakar Siddique, senior government officials, and a large number of farmers from across the state.
