Fight Intensifies to Protect Workers’ Rights Amid Concerns Over MGNREGA: Deepika Pandey Singh

Godda (Mahagama): Jharkhand’s Minister for Rural Development, Rural Works and Panchayati Raj, Ms. Deepika Pandey Singh, said that the state government is fully committed to the comprehensive development of Panchayats. She stated that due to continuous efforts over the past year, an amount ranging from approximately ₹52 lakh to ₹65 lakh has been sanctioned by the Central Government for Panchayat development. Earlier, Panchayats had to manage with just ₹5–10 lakh, but now with allocations exceeding ₹50 lakh, both small and large development works are being completed at a faster pace. This has also accelerated long-pending projects.

Expressing concern over MGNREGA, the minister said that attempts are being made to weaken this important scheme. She added that the process is being carried out gradually in such a way that workers may begin to hesitate in demanding work. Despite this, the state government is continuously striving to secure pending funds from the Centre so that workers receive their rightful dues. She clarified that MGNREGA is entirely a Central Government scheme, and the state government is firmly committed to fighting for workers’ payments and protecting their rights.

In this context, Ms. Deepika Pandey Singh also laid the foundation stone for the construction of a guard wall at a pond near Durga Sthan in Khatti village under Simanpur Panchayat in Mehrma block of Mahagama. This initiative will help in conserving the pond, reducing waterlogging and soil erosion, and strengthening sanitation in the area.

Assuring the local people, she said that all the needs of the region will be fulfilled on a priority basis. Proper drinking water arrangements will be ensured soon, and concrete steps are being taken to strengthen the irrigation system in the surrounding areas. The excavation of Lakdamara Dah has been completed, and recommendations have also been made for the development of other water sources.

The minister further said that old drainage channels will be renovated to revive water flow, which will strengthen irrigation within the next year. This will ensure adequate water availability for farmers and lead to an increase in agricultural production.

Emphasizing road infrastructure, she said that along with major roads, the construction and repair of dilapidated rural roads connecting villages will be completed during this tenure.

Reiterating the government’s commitment, the minister said that the goal is to ensure holistic and inclusive development at the Panchayat level, where basic amenities, employment, and resources reach every individual. She added that any attempt to weaken a rights-based scheme like MGNREGA will be strongly opposed, and the government will continue its struggle to protect the rights of workers.
