Delay in BMT Puts Children’s Lives at Risk: CPI(M)

Ranchi: The Communist Party of India (Marxist) on Sunday expressed concern over the delay in implementing key healthcare announcements made by the state Health Minister, warning that inaction could endanger the lives of children requiring urgent medical intervention.

In a statement, the party said that the proposed Bone Marrow Transplant (BMT) unit at Sadar Hospital, announced in December last year, is yet to become operational. The Minister had also assured financial assistance of ₹15 lakh for each eligible patient, but the scheme has not been effectively rolled out so far.

Highlighting the urgency of the issue, CPI(M) noted that BMT procedures must be carried out within a specific age and physiological window. Delays significantly reduce the chances of success, potentially depriving many children—particularly those suffering from thalassemia and sickle cell anaemia—of life-saving treatment.

CPI(M)State Secretary Prakash Viplav said that unless immediate and concrete steps are taken, dozens of children risk losing their chance at survival. He urged the Health Department to act with urgency and accountability.

The party further pointed out that the Regional Eye Centre at the Rajendra Institute of Medical Sciences (RIMS), despite being ready, is yet to be inaugurated, reflecting broader delays in strengthening public healthcare infrastructure.

Calling for immediate intervention, CPI(M) demanded that government healthcare services, including RIMS, be upgraded and made fully functional, as a majority of the state’s population—especially the poor—depends on them.
