Anganwadi Workers’ Union Holds State Conference in Ranchi, Raises Key Demands

Ranchi: The fourth state conference of the Jharkhand Anganwadi Workers and Helpers Union, affiliated with the All India Federation of Anganwadi Workers and Helpers (AIFA) and CITU, concluded at Safdar Hashmi Auditorium on Sunday. The programme began with flag hoisting and floral tributes to martyrs.

Addressing the gathering, AIFA National General Secretary Usha Rani alleged that Anganwadi workers are being exploited in the name of the FRS system, with honorariums being withheld. She said ‘Ready-to-Eat’ (THR) supplies have not been provided for the past six months. Calling FRS a “deception,” she demanded provision of laptops with data packs for official work and OTP-enabled mobile phones for beneficiaries to ensure access to services.

She further said the workload on workers is increasing without any rise in honorarium since 2018, despite rising inflation. She also pointed out that, despite Supreme Court directions, Anganwadi workers in Jharkhand and several other states are yet to receive gratuity benefits, leaving them with no option but to intensify their agitation.

AIFA National Vice President Veena Gupta demanded that Anganwadi workers be exempted from SIR-related duties, alleging harassment through late-night calls by officials. She also called for exemption from election duties.

CITU State General Secretary Bishwajit Deb criticised the implementation of four labour codes, alleging that they weaken workers’ rights and aim to curtail democratic and constitutional freedoms.

During the conference, a new state committee was elected. Meera Devi was elected President; Preeti Hansda, Avigel Hembrom and Varsha Rani as Vice Presidents; Meenu Murmu as General Secretary; Savitri Soren, Sonamuni Murmu and Baby Kumari as Secretaries; and Lakhan Lal Mandal as Treasurer.
