BSL appeals for industrial peace to keep Bokaro’s growth on track

₹20,000-crore expansion expected to create new opportunities; management stresses dialogue, employment and plant safety

Bokaro: Bokaro Steel Plant (BSL), a major unit of Steel Authority of India Limited (SAIL), has appealed to all stakeholders to maintain industrial peace and resolve grievances through dialogue, highlighting the importance of uninterrupted operations for Bokaro’s economy, employment and public safety.

Describing the plant as the economic lifeline of Bokaro Steel City and surrounding areas, the management said BSL provides direct employment to more than 20,000 people and supports numerous livelihoods through indirect employment and local businesses. Its steel also contributes to major national infrastructure projects and Indian Navy warships.

The management noted that past disruptions had adversely affected production, financial performance and expansion plans. It urged stakeholders to avoid confrontation, stressing that industrial instability can affect livelihoods, investment prospects and regional development.

Highlighting initiatives for displaced families and local youth, BSL said 204 of the 950 apprentices on the available list had secured contractual employment as skilled workers by October 3, while more than 50 others were undergoing safety training. Additionally, 10% of the total manpower in expansion and other projects has been earmarked for displaced persons through outsourcing agencies.

The proposed expansion, involving an investment of approximately ₹20,000 crore, is expected to create fresh employment opportunities and accelerate regional growth.

Emphasising that dialogue is the key to lasting solutions, BSL reiterated its commitment to addressing concerns raised by displaced groups and apprentices through discussions involving the district administration and the apprentices’ association. The management appealed for peaceful engagement without disrupting plant operations.

It also highlighted the importance of plant safety, cautioning that gate blockades could affect critical safety arrangements, particularly the round-the-clock monitoring of sensitive gas pipelines.

BSL urged all stakeholders to cooperate in safeguarding industrial peace and the region’s future, stressing that the plant’s progress is closely linked to Bokaro’s prosperity.
