Bokaro Steel Plant hosted a LEO (Learning, Excellence & Optimization) workshop on 18 November, highlighting strategies to extend the campaign life of reheating furnaces and reduce scale formation. The HR–L&D and Hot Strip Mill departments jointly coordinated the event.
Participants included engineers and furnace specialists from several SAIL units such as Bhilai, Rourkela, Burnpur, Durgapur, Bokaro and RDCIS, along with teams from JSW Vijayanagar Works, Jindal Steel Odisha, Danieli India and Fives Stein India. The workshop served as a platform for sharing best practices and emerging technologies that enhance operational efficiency.
Executive Director (Works) Priya Ranjan, Executive Director (Operations) A. K. Dutta and senior BSL officials inaugurated the programme. After administering the safety pledge, Priya Ranjan underlined the vital role of preventive and regular maintenance. He noted that effective control of scale and rust formation boosts furnace longevity, improves product consistency and lowers operating costs.
Technical discussions covered the science behind scale formation, advanced maintenance techniques, refractory strategies, automation, temperature control and digital monitoring, with OEM partners offering practical recommendations.
The workshop strengthened cross-unit collaboration and broadened the understanding of furnace-life management, reaffirming BSL’s drive towards smarter, more efficient industrial practices.
