US Deciding India’s Crude Oil Purchases, Alleges Brinda Karat

Ranchi: Senior leader of the Communist Party of India (Marxist), Brinda Karat, has accused the central government of compromising India’s sovereignty and self-respect. She alleged that the Modi government has surrendered to pressure from the United States and that Washington is now deciding from which countries India should purchase crude oil.

Addressing a press conference at the party’s state office in Ranchi on Tuesday, Karat said such a situation had never occurred before. She also criticised the silence of the Government of India over what she described as attacks on Iran by the United States and Israel, claiming that the government’s stance had isolated India at the international level.

Karat said the party has launched a nationwide campaign to highlight pressing public issues. According to her, the campaign has received a strong response in Jharkhand. Over the past four days, the party’s “Jan Aakrosh Jatha” has contacted more than one lakh people across the state to convey its message.

Speaking at the press conference, party state secretary Prakash Viplav said preparations were underway for a rally in Delhi on March 24. The rally will raise demands including scrapping the proposed VBG (Gram G) scheme in place of MGNREGA, repealing the four labour codes, withdrawing the Electricity Amendment Bill, and cancelling the Seed Bill, which the party claims is harmful to farmers.

As part of the campaign, the South Chotanagpur-level Jan Aakrosh Jatha carried out outreach programmes in several areas of Ranchi, Gumla, Khunti and Lohardaga districts before reaching Bundu around 1 pm on Tuesday. A public meeting held at Shaheed Birsa Chowk in Bundu, under the chairmanship of Suresh Munda, was addressed by Brinda Karat, Prakash Viplav, Sufal Mahto and several other state-level leaders.

Meanwhile, the jatha taken out in the Santhal Pargana region concluded in Maheshpur block of Pakur district. During the campaign, thousands of handbills were distributed and a list of nearly 2,000 people willing to participate in the Delhi rally was prepared.

Party leaders said that in the next phase of the campaign, district-level padyatras and gram sabhas will be organised in rural areas.
