50,000-Postcard Movement Mobilises Support Across Political and Social Spectrum
The long-pending expansion of Bokaro Steel Plant (BSL) has received a major boost after the Centre cleared the project following a sustained citizens’ campaign led by Kumar Amit under the banner of Bokaro Welfare Civil Society. A civic felicitation programme and press interaction were held at Sector-2 Ambe Garden, where Amit expressed gratitude to Prime Minister Narendra Modi for responding to Bokaro’s long-standing demand.
Kumar Amit said that over the past seven months, around 50,000 people from different sections of society wrote postcards to the Prime Minister seeking revival of the BSL expansion and upgradation of Bokaro General Hospital into a super-specialty hospital. He added that representations were also made to Union ministers, the Jharkhand Governor, the Leader of Opposition, former Chief Ministers, MPs and senior officials.
He said Leader of Opposition Babulal Marandi and several MPs supported the campaign, while former Chief Minister Arjun Munda and Dhanbad MP Dhullu Mahato repeatedly raised the issue with the Union Steel Ministry, contributing to the clearance of the project.
Kumar Amit thanked Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Jharkhand Governor Santosh Gangwar, Union Steel Ministers H.D. Kumaraswamy and Bhupathi Raju Srinivasa Varma, Babulal Marandi, former Chief Ministers Arjun Munda and Raghubar Das, BJP state president Aditya Sahu, MPs Dhullu Mahato and Kalicharan Singh, Rajya Sabha MPs Deepak Prakash and Pradeep Verma, Union Steel Secretary Sandeep Poundrik, senior officials, former and present BSL management, Bokaro residents and the media.
He announced that similar postcard campaigns would be launched for the Bokaro airport and the proposed industrial corridor, while the movement to upgrade Bokaro General Hospital would continue. Officer Association president A.K. Singh appealed for continued public cooperation.
Retired IPS officer Jitendra Singh said the expansion would accelerate Bokaro’s development. Chamber of Commerce representative Narendra Singh highlighted economic opportunities, while retired Deputy General Manager Pradyumna Saw spoke on employment generation. BMS leader Ranjay Kumar said the expansion would help check job losses, and displaced leaders Abdul Rab and Shivprasad Shibu expressed hope for employment for displaced youth.
