Ranchi: An 11-member delegation comprising representatives of associations of patients suffering from Thalassemia, Sickle Cell Anaemia, Haemophilia and Aplastic Anaemia, along with the Jharkhand State Voluntary Blood Donation Organisation Coordination Committee, met Jharkhand Governor Santosh Kumar Gangwar at Raj Bhavan (Lok Bhavan), Ranchi, on Friday. Led by blood donor activist Nadeem Khan, the delegation submitted a three-point memorandum seeking stronger policies for voluntary blood donation and improved healthcare support for patients with blood disorders.
The delegation highlighted the challenges faced by patients suffering from Thalassemia, Sickle Cell Anaemia, Haemophilia and Aplastic Anaemia, particularly the irregular availability of blood and the need for a comprehensive policy to address their long-term medical requirements. They urged the Governor to ensure practical measures for the welfare of blood disorder patients across the state.
The memorandum also called for strengthening Jharkhand's voluntary blood donation movement through sustained public awareness campaigns, annual blood donation promotion programmes and regular monitoring of government blood banks. The delegation pointed out that blood availability in several blood banks has remained inadequate over the past seven months, affecting patients who require regular transfusions. It urged the government to improve blood collection and distribution in line with actual demand.
The delegation further sought measures to strengthen the functioning of Red Cross Societies across districts, encourage greater community participation in voluntary blood donation and formulate a practical, sensitive and people-centric policy to improve the state's blood donation network.
Governor Santosh Kumar Gangwar assured the delegation that the issues raised in the memorandum would be examined seriously and that appropriate steps would be taken to promote voluntary blood donation and improve the blood banking system in Jharkhand. Principal Secretary to the Governor Nitin Madan Kulkarni was also present during the meeting.
The delegation also invited the Governor to attend the 8th Jharkhand State-Level Blood Donation Promotion Programme. During the meeting, family members of blood disorder patients presented the Governor with a traditional Jharkhandi stole and a bouquet as a mark of respect.
The delegation included blood donor activists and family members of patients, namely Nadeem Khan, Suraj Jhandai, Engineer Shahnawaz Abbas, Sanjay Toppo, Devki Devi, Pandit Ajit Mishra, Sanjay Mahto, Seema Devi, Sujata Kumari, Tejlal Mahto and patient Alex Toppo.
