Ranchi: The Communist Party of India (Marxist) has demanded that the Union Government withdraw its reported decision to scrap 10 National Highway (NH) projects in Jharkhand, alleging that the move would result in a waste of public funds and adversely affect the state's infrastructure development.
In a statement issued on Saturday, CPI(M) Jharkhand State Secretary Prakash Biplab said media reports suggest that Union Minister for Road Transport and Highways Nitin Gadkari, during a ministry review meeting, directed that 10 NH projects worth over ₹4,000 crore be discontinued. He alleged that the Centre was attempting to shift the blame for delays onto the state government instead of addressing shortcomings within its own ministry.
According to the party, the tendering process for these projects had already been completed several years ago, budgetary allocations had been made, and preliminary work had commenced in a number of cases. Scrapping the projects at this stage, the statement said, would amount to a waste of public money.
The CPI(M) expressed concern that key infrastructure works, including the proposed flyover at Tori Crossing and a Railway Over Bridge (ROB) near the railway station, were also among the projects reportedly facing cancellation.
The party urged the Jharkhand government to intervene immediately and take up the matter with the Centre. It further said that if land acquisition is delaying the construction of flyovers and railway overbridges, the issue should be resolved through public consultation and consensus so that the projects can proceed without further delay.
The CPI(M) also said its Members of Parliament would seek to raise the issue during the upcoming Monsoon Session of Parliament, scheduled to begin on July 24.
