Social Organisations Protest Against SIR, Call It Unconstitutional

Ranchi: Various social organisations staged a protest at Albert Ekka Chowk in Ranchi on Sunday against the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) exercise, alleging that the process is undemocratic and lacks transparency. The demonstrators claimed that the exercise is being used to scrutinise citizens' identities and termed it unconstitutional and against the spirit of democracy.

Raising slogans such as "We will not tolerate citizenship verification through SIR" and "Stop using procedural inconsistencies to force voters into long verification queues," the protesters demanded greater transparency in the electoral process.

The demonstrators also called for the audit of electoral rolls to be conducted at the Gram Sabha and Ward Sabha levels instead of being confined to the offices of the Election Commission. They raised the slogan "Our Identity, Our Khatiyan" while urging authorities to adopt a transparent and accountable verification process at the grassroots level.

Among those present at the protest were Praveer Peter, Fr. Tom Kavala, Dr. Vishwanath Azad of Jharkhand Sarvodaya Mandal, Kumar Chandra Mardi from Kolhan, Aloka Kujur, Elina Horo, Jyoti Behan, Nandita, Rimil, Riya Tulika Pingua, Siraj Dutta, Sushma Biruli, Shashi, Afzal Anees, and several other representatives of social organisations and civil society groups.

The protest was organised jointly under the banners of the Jharkhand Janadhikar Mahasabha, Sajha Kadam, United Milli Forum, and the Bharat Jodo Abhiyan. The demonstration concluded peacefully.
