RANCHI: The Forum of Civil Pensioners’ Associations, Jharkhand, organised a protest demonstration at Shaheed Chowk on Saturday in support of its 11-point charter of demands. Hundreds of pensioners’ representatives from the Railways, Postal Department, RMS, banks, BSNL, State Government Pensioners’ Association and Jharkhand Pensioners’ Welfare Society participated in the demonstration.
Representatives from Jamshedpur, Dhanbad, Daltonganj and Hazaribagh also joined the protest.
The meeting was jointly chaired by J.S. Behl of the Railways and Sadhan Kumar Sinha of the Postal Department. Addressing the gathering, state secretary M.Z. Khan recalled the Central Government employees’ strike of September 19, 1968. He said that the then Central Government had taken action against the striking employees under ESMO, resulting in arrests, dismissals and suspensions of a large number of employees. He said 17 employees had lost their lives during the movement.
The day was observed as Martyrs’ Day, and tributes were paid to the employees who lost their lives during the 1968 struggle.
The gathering was addressed by Chanchal Kumar Singh, J.S. Behl, Naresh Lal, S.P. Singh, K.D. Rai Byathit, Sadhan Sinha, Brij Banshi Prasad Singh, Jagdev Prasad, M.L. Singh, Naveen Chaudhary and G.D. Sahu, among others.
The major demands include withdrawal of the validation amendment, revision of the Terms of Reference, withdrawal of NPS/UPS and restoration of OPS, merger of 50 per cent DA/DR with salary and pension, pension updation for bank pensioners, pension revision for BSNL pensioners, grant of interim relief and reduction of the pension commutation period from 15 years to 10 years and 8 months.
Haseena Tigga, Amita Tirkey, Izhar Ansari, Hira Ram Tiwari, Bipin Chaudhary, Naresh Prasad, Sudhir Kumar Verma, Abhijit Malik, Sushil Kumar Pandey, Kalidas Munda, Madhusudan Rai, H.K. Banerjee and S.C. Pal were among those present, besides hundreds of pensioners’ representatives from various departments.
