CPI(M) Expresses Concern Over Bhojshala-Kamal Maula Mosque Verdict

Ranchi/Delhi: The Polit Bureau of the Communist Party of India (Marxist) has expressed grave concern over the Madhya Pradesh High Court judgment in the Bhojshala-Kamal Maula Mosque dispute, stating that the verdict could adversely impact the secular and democratic foundations of the country.

In a statement issued on Saturday, the CPI(M) said that by setting aside the Archaeological Survey of India’s order allowing Muslims to offer prayers at the complex, the High Court had adopted arguments similar to those advanced in the Babri Masjid-Ram Janmabhoomi title suit. The party observed that the ruling may influence several other disputes of a similar nature.

The party further stated that the judgment reflects a growing trend of reopening historical and religious disputes, which could deepen communal divisions in society. According to the CPI(M), the verdict appears to ignore the provisions and spirit of the Places of Worship Act, 1991, enacted by Parliament to prevent endless communal contestations over religious places.

The statement alleged that such judgments would only strengthen communal forces like the BJP-RSS combine, which, it said, have consistently attempted to foreground divisive religious issues while diverting attention from people’s pressing concerns.

The CPI(M) expressed hope that the Supreme Court, while hearing appeals in the matter, would set aside the High Court judgment. The party also urged the judiciary to uphold the secular principles enshrined in the Constitution and called upon all secular and democratic forces to resist attempts to divide people on religious lines.
