Ranchi:: Governor Shri Santosh Kumar Gangwar today released the Hindi translation of the renowned anthropologist Sarat Chandra Roy’s significant work “Oraon Religion and Customs”, translated by Dr. Raj Ratan Sahay. The book was unveiled at a dignified ceremony held at Raj Bhavan. The event was attended by former Chief Minister Shri Arjun Munda, MLAs Dr. Rameshwar Oraon and Shri Saryu Rai, former MP Shri Sudarshan Bhagat, former MLA Dr. Gangotri Kujur, along with several scholars, researchers, and representatives from various academic and social institutions.
Addressing the gathering, the Governor said that the book is a living document of India’s tribal traditions, beliefs, social structures, and cultural life. He noted that Sarat Chandra Roy, through his extensive research, has portrayed the worldview, customs, and traditions of the Oraon community with great depth and sensitivity. Congratulating the translator, Dr. Raj Ratan Sahay, he said that translation is a powerful medium to bring the knowledge of any culture to a wider audience. The Hindi edition will serve as an important bridge connecting mainstream readers to the cultural heritage and wisdom of the Oraon community.
The Governor emphasized that India’s rich tribal heritage is an integral part of the nation’s ancient cultural roots. In today’s rapidly modernizing world, when traditional knowledge and values need deeper understanding and preservation, research-based publications like this become extremely valuable. He added that local culture and language should not remain confined to a particular region; efforts must be made to share this rich heritage with a broader audience.
The Governor also highlighted the decision of the Hon’ble Prime Minister to celebrate the birth anniversary of Bhagwan Birsa Munda as “Janjatiya Gaurav Diwas” across the country. Recalling the contribution of tribal communities to India’s freedom struggle, he said their role was glorious and inspiring. He remembered great tribal freedom fighters such as Bhagwan Birsa Munda, Tilka Manjhi, Sidho-Kanhu, Chand-Bhairav, Phulo-Jhano, and Veer Budhu Bhagat, who challenged foreign rule with courage, sacrifice, and an unyielding spirit. Referring to the contribution of the Oraon community, he said the Tana Bhagat movement, based on truth, non-violence, self-discipline, and swadeshi values, became a powerful social awakening that provided a new direction to the national movement.
Former Chief Minister Shri Arjun Munda, while addressing the gathering, congratulated Dr. Raj Ratan Sahay and mentioned that this is his third translation. He said that translating any book is a highly important task and must be done with utmost sensitivity so that the original essence and emotions remain intact. He added that literature, culture, and art form the foundation of the identity of any region or state.
The Governor expressed hope that the book will be useful not only for researchers and scholars but also for all readers interested in understanding India’s remarkable cultural diversity. He extended his best wishes for the wide reach and meaningful impact of the publication.
