Forging Water Sustainability: BSL to Build Jharkhand’s First-of-its-Kind 30 MGD Sewage Treatment Plant

Bokaro, November 10:

In a landmark step toward sustainable industrial growth, SAIL-Bokaro Steel Plant (BSL) is set to establish Jharkhand’s first Sewage Treatment Plant (STP) of 30 Million Gallons per Day (MGD) capacity under the Hybrid Annuity Model (HAM) — marking a major stride in advancing the concept of a Circular Water Economy.

BSL currently supplies around 39 MGD of potable water for its industrial and township needs, generating nearly 30 MGD of wastewater. The upcoming plant, equipped with Sequential Batch Reactor (SBR) technology, will treat and recycle sewage water for reuse in steel production — delivering water cleaner than that drawn from the Damodar River and meeting all Pollution Control Board norms.

The project is expected to cut freshwater drawl by 4,000–5,000 cubic metres per hour, saving about ₹50 crore annually, and help achieve Zero Liquid Discharge (ZLD). It also aligns with national missions such as Swachh Bharat Abhiyan, Jal Jeevan Mission, and Namami Gange.

Once awarded within the current financial year, the initiative will make BSL a pioneer in eco-efficient industrial operations, setting new benchmarks in sustainable wastewater management not only for Jharkhand but for the Indian steel sector at large.
