Doranda’s Initiative Sets an Example for Jharkhand — Artificial Ponds Enhance Faith and Safety in Chhath Festival

Ranchi: The fervor of Chhath Mahaparv has reached its peak in the capital city, Ranchi. This year, several artificial ponds have been created across different localities, allowing thousands of devotees to offer arghya to the Sun God while observing a strict fast. Few people, however, know that this initiative began in 2018 from Doranda, when senior Jharkhand Pradesh Congress Committee leader and Chief Patron of Ranchi Metropolitan Chhath Puja Committee, Alok Kumar Dubey, constructed the first artificial pond with just ten volunteers.

During the COVID-19 pandemic, when reaching rivers became difficult, Dubey organized local residents to build a pond in the Chhappan Set area of Doranda, ensuring both safety and cleanliness. That small initiative has now transformed into a grand setup, where hundreds of devotees and thousands of visitors gather to perform rituals with devotion. Clean water is supplied through tankers, Gangajal is added, rose petals are sprinkled, and committee members stay awake all night to maintain purity and order.

Dubey emphasizes that Chhath is not merely a religious observance but a festival promoting social unity, cleanliness, and environmental protection. With rising river pollution posing health risks to devotees, these artificial ponds have become a safe and sustainable alternative.

Alok Dubey has urged the district administration and Ranchi Municipal Corporation to make this public initiative permanent, suggesting that every ward should have clean and well-maintained ponds. Today, Doranda’s model stands as a symbol of faith, cleanliness, and community cooperation across Jharkhand

Leaders like Gautam Kumar Dubey, Manoj Singh, Sanjay Singh, Pankaj Tiwari, Vivek Singh, and Menhul Dubey have played key roles in supporting the movement and inspiring the local community.
