Ranchi:: The Communist Party of India (Marxist) [CPI(M)] clarified its position on several crucial political issues during a press conference held in Ranchi.
Party Polit Bureau member, senior leader and former Rajya Sabha MP Brinda Karat said, “The special revision of the electoral rolls cannot be turned into an instrument for determining citizenship.”
Commenting on the political scenario in Bihar, she said, “It is certain that the Mahagathbandhan (Grand Alliance) will form the next government in Bihar.”
She added that “Public support is continuously rising against the BJP’s divisive politics.”
Strong Opposition to the SIR Process – “It Is Not a Tool for Citizenship Determination”
Brinda Karat strongly opposed the Election Commission of India’s decision to extend the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls to twelve states.
She stated that this process could become a means to disenfranchise the poor, Dalits, Adivasis, and other weaker sections of society.
The Constitution clearly states that citizenship is a prerequisite for voter registration, but determining citizenship does not fall under the jurisdiction of the Election Commission,” she said. “Despite this, the Commission is proceeding with the process even though the matter is pending before the Supreme Court.”
Karat accused the Commission of having “learned nothing from Bihar’s experience.”
She pointed out that the Commission had sought 11 documents to establish eligibility, none of which were declared mandatory. “Even the Aadhaar card was included only after the intervention of the Supreme Court,” she added.
She warned that this revision exercise must not become “a tool to further the BJP’s divisive Hindutva agenda.”
The CPI(M) demanded that the Election Commission immediately halt the extension of the SIR process and ensure that the revision of electoral rolls remains inclusive and impartial.
“The Struggle to Protect People’s Rights Will Continue”
Concluding the press conference, Brinda Karat said that CPI(M) will intensify nationwide movements on issues such as citizenship rights, voting rights, employment, health, and education.
“We will not allow any conspiracy that seeks to delete the poor and the marginalized from the voters’ list in the name of citizenship,” she asserted.
CPI(M) Targets Health Department – “Transfusing Infected Blood Is an Unforgivable Crime”
CPI(M) Jharkhand State Secretary Prakash Viplav reacted sharply to the recent incident in which HIV-infected blood was transfused to patients at the Chaibasa Hospital.
He termed it “an unforgivable crime” and said that the state Health Minister must take full responsibility.
This is not mere negligence; it is playing with people’s lives,” he said. “The incident exposes the serious collapse of the state’s healthcare system.”
The CPI(M) demanded a high-level investigation and strict action against the officials responsible.
Support to JMM Candidate in Ghatshila Bypoll
During the same press conference, the CPI(M) also announced its support for the Jharkhand Mukti Morcha (JMM) candidate in the Ghatshila Assembly by-election.
Party leaders said that the decision was taken to strengthen secular unity against the BJP’s “anti-people and divisive policies.”
Prakash Viplav stated, “We will join hands with all secular forces in Jharkhand to fight against the politics of religion and caste.”
