Municipal Sanitation Workers’ Strike Postponed, Administration Gets Time Till September 20

Ranchi :: The Jharkhand Municipal Workers’ Union has decided to postpone the sanitation workers’ strike that was earlier scheduled for September 10. Union president Bhawan Singh informed that the municipal administration requested additional time to consider and decide on the workers’ legitimate demands. In the interest of the workers, the union has agreed to give the administration time until September 20.
Key Demands of the Workers
The union has placed several basic demands before the administration, which include:
Enforcement of mandatory earned leave, casual leave, national festival leave, and maternity leave through official orders.
Payment of bonus to all employees before Dussehra under the provisions of the Bonus Act, 1965.
Timely and equal distribution of bonuses to workers employed under both the Municipal Corporation and the Sanitation Corporation.
Workers argue that the entire sanitation system depends on their hard work, yet their fundamental needs and legal rights continue to be ignored.
Meeting Between Union and Management
In the recent meeting between the union and municipal management, officials stated that it was not possible to make an immediate decision and sought additional time. The union, keeping the workers’ interests in mind, granted an extension until September 20.
Union president Bhawan Singh warned, “If no concrete decision and official communication is provided to the union by the deadline, we will convene a meeting of workers and announce fresh dates for the strike. In such a scenario, the full responsibility for any disruption or inconvenience faced by the public will rest on the municipal administrator, not the workers.”
Appeal to the Labour Department
The union has also appealed to the state Labour Department to intervene. It said that enforcing mandatory labour laws is the department’s responsibility. If timely action is not taken, workers will be compelled to stage a demonstration before the Labour Commissioner.
Message to the Workers
The union has urged all sanitation workers to remain prepared for a possible strike. President Bhawan Singh stated that the workers’ struggle is not just for bonuses or leave but for dignity and rightful entitlements. “We may be forced to take the path of agitation, but until then, we are giving the administration an opportunity to respond,” he added.
What Lies Ahead
For now, the workers have shown goodwill by granting a 10-day extension. All eyes are now on September 20. If the administration fails to resolve the issues by then, sanitation services across Ranchi and other municipal bodies could come to a complete halt, causing serious inconvenience to residents.
