Ranchi: Left parties in Jharkhand have announced a statewide agitation against the Mines and Minerals (Development and Regulation) Amendment Bill, 2026. The announcement was made at a joint press conference held at the CPI(ML) office, where leaders of the CPI, CPI(M), CPI(ML) Liberation and SUCI(C) outlined their protest programme.
The Left parties have decided to burn copies of the Bill in all blocks, panchayats and urban local bodies across the state from August 25 to 31.
They will also conduct an awareness campaign in villages and organise street-corner meetings at public places. In Ranchi, the parties will stage a demonstration in front of Lok Bhavan and submit a memorandum to the President through the Governor.
As part of the next phase of the agitation, the Left parties will mobilise other secular political parties and mass organisations to gherao Central government establishments. They also announced that a Jharkhand bandh would be called subsequently.
The Left leaders alleged that the Bill was passed in both Houses of Parliament without adequate discussion and described it as a major attack by the Modi government on the rights of states and the federal structure. They claimed that if enacted, the legislation could cause Jharkhand, a mineral-rich state, an estimated annual loss of around ₹13,000 crore. They said the resulting shortage of funds could affect several social security and welfare schemes, including scholarships and the Maiya Samman Yojana.
The Left parties asserted that they would not tolerate any attempt to weaken the rights of states over mineral resources. They said the statewide campaign would be expanded further and taken to the grassroots level.
CPI(ML) state secretary Manoj Bhakt, CPI state secretary Mahendra Pathak, CPI(M) state secretary Prakash Viplav, SUCI(C) leader Mintu Paswan, AITUC's Ashok Yadav and other leaders were present at the press conference.
