Ranchi: On the eve of the nationwide general strike scheduled for February 12, 2026, a massive torchlight procession was taken out in the city at the call of the Joint Trade Union Platform, Ranchi. The march witnessed wide participation from various labour organisations, employees, workers from the unorganised sector, scheme workers, farmers, agricultural labourers, and democratic forces.
The procession reached Firayalal Chowk, where it culminated in a public meeting.
During the march, workers raised strong slogans against the Central government’s anti-labour policies, the four labour codes, and other anti-people laws. Speakers said that the labour codes are an attack on workers’ rights, as they pave the way for longer working hours, restrictions on the right to strike, the end of permanent employment, promotion of contractual and temporary jobs, and hurdles in forming trade unions.
They also accused the government of weakening social security, ending guarantees related to ESI and PF, and making layoffs and lockouts easier.
The meeting demanded that the labour codes be repealed and the old labour laws be restored. It also called for the withdrawal of several anti-people legislations, including the Electricity Amendment Bill, the Seed Bill, and the Social Security Insurance Bill.
The Joint Trade Union Platform appealed to all workers, employees, farmers, youth, and the general public to make the February 12 general strike a historic success and to demonstrate united strength against anti-worker and anti-farmer policies.
The meeting was led by Ashok Yadav of AITUC, Mahendra Pathak and Ajay Singh of the Kisan Sabha, Shubhendu Sen, Mohan Dutta and Bhim Sahu of ACTU, Prakash Viplav, S.K. Rai and Prateek Mishra of CITU, Prafulla Linda of the Adivasi Rights Forum, Sukhnath Lohra, Birendra Kumar of the Jharkhand Agricultural Labour Union, and Naveen Chaudhary from the Non-Gazetted Employees’ Association.
