Priya Ranjan’s Leadership Drives BSL’s Landmark Progress in Water Sustainability

SAIL’s Bokaro Steel Plant has achieved a notable breakthrough in water conservation, recording a sharp decline in water consumption and a substantial reduction in overall water cost during the past year. The progress reflects a series of targeted initiatives steered by the Water Management Department under the leadership of Director In-Charge Priya Ranjan.

Plant data show that monthly water usage fell from 99.86 lakh cubic metres in December 2024 to 72.82 lakh cubic metres in December 2025, translating into a 27 per cent cut in water drawal. At the same time, net expenditure on water dropped by nearly 55 per cent, even after a revision in water tariffs.

The improvement was achieved through strengthened zero liquid discharge practices, higher reuse of treated effluent, and systematic reduction of losses by upgrading ageing pipelines and distribution networks. Measures such as de-silting of reservoirs, improved control of treatment parameters and tighter monitoring across utilities further enhanced efficiency.

The initiative has delivered significant financial benefits while reinforcing Bokaro Steel Plant’s commitment to sustainable operations, regulatory compliance and reduced dependence on fresh water resources.
