Demonstration by Right to Information Forum with Slogans and Placards

Ranchi :: On the occasion of Right to Information (RTI) Foundation Day, members of the Jan Soochna Adhikar Manch (Public Information Rights Forum) staged a demonstration at Albert Ekka Chowk in Ranchi, holding slogans and placards to raise their demands.

The forum’s convener, Mohammad Akram Rashid, urged the Jharkhand government
to immediately appoint a State Information Commissioner. He said that nearly 25,000 applications are pending for hearings in the Jharkhand Information Commission, yet the state government has not appointed an Information Commissioner so far.

Rashid added that the Right to Information Act is a powerful tool to empower common citizens, but due to the government’s negligence and insensitivity, its very purpose is being undermined.

The main demands placed before the government include:

The Jharkhand government must clarify why the post of Information Commissioner has remained vacant since 2019.

2. A retired judge should be appointed as the Chief Information Commissioner.

3. The presence of concerned officers during commission hearings should be made mandatory.

4. Second appeal hearings should be conducted in a time-bound manner.

5. Information should be provided accurately and on time.

6. A member from the minority community should also be appointed as an Information Commissioner.

7. The rights of common citizens must be restored and protected.

8. The Central Government should stop interfering with the posts of Information Commissioners.

9. Both Central and State Governments should launch awareness campaigns through print and electronic media to promote the Right to Information Act.

Among those present at the event were Sonali Kewat, Vijay, Suhail, Asfar, Naseem Pathan, Mujahid, Islam, Farhan, Ryan, Kabir, and Sufiyan, along with several other participants.
