SAIL Powers Indigenous Defence with Steel Supply for INS Ajay and INS Nistar

Steel Authority of India Limited (SAIL), a Maharatna and India’s largest steel producer, has played a key role in India’s defence manufacturing by supplying specialized steel for two newly inducted naval vessels—INS Ajay and INS Nistar—commissioned in July 2025.

INS Ajay, the final vessel in the indigenously developed Anti-Submarine Warfare Shallow Water Craft (ASW-SWC) series, was built by Garden Reach Shipbuilders & Engineers Ltd. (GRSE). SAIL supplied the entire quantity of DMR-grade steel plates, contributing to the vessel’s high structural strength and stealth features.

SAIL also provided complete special-grade steel for INS Nistar, the country’s first indigenously designed Diving Support Vessel (DSV), commissioned by Hindustan Shipyard Ltd. (HSL). INS Nistar is equipped for submarine rescue, deep-sea operations, and extended underwater missions.

These contributions reflect SAIL’s ongoing commitment to supporting India’s defence preparedness and self-reliance. Through its advanced steel offerings, SAIL continues to be a vital contributor to the nation’s strategic infrastructure and maritime strength.
