No Evictions Without Rehabilitation: CPI(M) Rally in Kolkata Demands Protection for the Poor

Ranchi/Kolkata: The Communist Party of India (Marxist)  organized a massive workers' rally from Sealdah to Fairlie Place in Kolkata on Saturday, protesting the eviction of railway slum residents without proper rehabilitation, the removal of hawkers from railway platforms, and the increased penalties imposed on street vendors. The party also criticized what it described as the "bulldozer politics" of the Central and State governments, alleging that such actions disproportionately target the poor and working classes.

Thousands of workers, railway slum dwellers, hawkers, and supporters of various mass organizations participated in the march, demanding secure rehabilitation, protection of livelihoods, and respect for the rights of informal workers. Protesters raised slogans against forced evictions and called for humane policies that safeguard the interests of economically weaker sections.

The rally concluded with a public meeting addressed by CPI(M) Polit Bureau member and West Bengal State Secretary Mohammed Salim, Central Committee member Sujan Chakraborty, and other senior party leaders. They alleged that the ongoing eviction drives without rehabilitation were unjust and threatened the livelihood of thousands of families dependent on railway settlements and informal vending.

The speakers urged the authorities to ensure proper rehabilitation before carrying out any eviction drives and to withdraw the enhanced fines imposed on hawkers. They asserted that the party would continue its democratic struggle to defend the rights of workers, slum residents, and street vendors.

The gathering concluded with a pledge to intensify the movement against what the party termed "bulldozer politics" and to continue fighting for the rights, rehabilitation, and livelihood security of the poor and marginalized sections of society.
