Civilian Sailors' Deaths Tragic, Action Must Be Taken Against Those Responsible: CPI(M)

Ranchi/New Delhi: The Communist Party of India (Marxist) [CPI(M)] has strongly condemned the killing of three Indian seafarers in an attack on the oil tanker MT Settebello in the Gulf region, describing the incident as a tragic loss of civilian lives.

In a statement, the party said that the deceased sailors—Aditya Sharma, Shivanand Chaurasia and Patnala Suresh—were carrying out their professional duties as civilian maritime workers and had no involvement in any military operation or geopolitical conflict.

Expressing deep condolences to the bereaved families, CPI(M) said innocent civilians and maritime workers are increasingly becoming victims of growing military tensions and conflicts in West Asia. The party also extended its solidarity to seafarers and maritime workers across the world facing risks due to escalating geopolitical confrontations.

Referring to reports from the Forward Seamen Union of India, affiliated to the Centre of Indian Trade Unions (CITU), CPI(M) said the MT Settebello, carrying a large number of Indian crew members, came under attack near the Strait of Hormuz. The party noted that a series of recent attacks on commercial vessels in the region has raised serious concerns over the safety and security of civilian shipping.

The party criticized the silence of the BJP-led Central Government over the incident and alleged that it had failed to clearly identify and condemn those responsible for the attack.

CPI(M) demanded that the Government of India unequivocally condemn the attack, seek accountability for the deaths of Indian citizens, and take all necessary diplomatic measures to ensure the safety and security of Indian seafarers working in conflict-affected regions.
