Ranchi: The Jharkhand Janadhikar Mahasabha has raised serious concerns over the appointment process of Information Commissioners in the State Information Commission and has urged the Governor to intervene. In a letter, the organisation requested that approval for the five shortlisted candidates be withheld and that appointments be made strictly in accordance with the Right to Information (RTI) Act and Supreme Court guidelines.
The Mahasabha stated that the State Information Commission has remained virtually non-functional since May 2020 due to vacancies in the posts of Chief Information Commissioner and Information Commissioners. As a result, thousands of second appeals are pending, undermining transparency and accountability.
According to media reports, the selection committee has recommended five names for the Governor’s approval. However, the Mahasabha alleged that the process violated provisions of the RTI Act. It pointed out that, as per Section 15 of the Act, only individuals with significant experience and eminence in relevant fields and no political affiliation are eligible.
The organisation has demanded a transparent selection process, appointment to all sanctioned posts, and activation of the Commission within a month.
