Three books by author Sudhir Pal released at Janwadi Lekhak Sangh event in Ranchi
RANCHI::Rajya Sabha MP Mahua Maji said the Fifth Schedule areas must be understood in the broader context of history, social justice and political will. She described the Fifth Schedule as an important constitutional shield for protecting the rights of tribal and indigenous communities.
She was speaking at a programme organised by the Janwadi Lekhak Sangh,
Ranchi, at the Ranchi Press Club auditorium on Saturday, where three books by author Sudhir Pal on the Fifth Schedule, PESA and tribal rights were released. Maji praised the author's work, saying his books would help readers better understand Jharkhand's socio-cultural realities and issues concerning tribal rights.
Former history professor and author Dr L.N. Rana said the books would help readers understand Jharkhand's history, society and struggles. Senior litterateur Kumar Brijendra chaired the session, while Aparajita Mishra conducted the proceedings.
During a discussion on PESA in Jharkhand: Tradition, Panchayat and Accountability, social activist Dayamani Barla stressed the importance of Gram Sabha supremacy and community rights over natural resources. Ramchandra Oraon said the fundamental conflict was between centralised authority and community self-governance.
Advocate Rashmi Katyayan, writer Ranendra and Dr J.P. Gupta shared their views on The Fifth Schedule: A Republic of Traditions. In a discussion on Internal Colonialism and the Tribal Question, writer Mahadev Toppo, Dr Mithilesh and Dr Vinod Kumar highlighted tribal rights, regional languages and the need to overcome colonial mindsets.
The programme concluded with a poetry session featuring works in Hindi, Urdu, Kurukh, Ho, Kharia, Mundari and Santali. A large number of writers, intellectuals and social activists attended the event.
