Ranchi: Campaigning for the Jharkhand local body elections has concluded. Polling will be held on February 23 across 48 urban local bodies — including 9 Municipal Corporations, 20 Municipal Councils, and 19 Nagar Panchayats — covering 1,087 wards. Voters will elect deputy Mayors Chairpersons and Ward Councillors. The counting of votes will take place on February 27. Thereafter, the elected ward councillors will choose the Deputy Mayor/Deputy Chairperson, leading to the formation of the municipal boards.
Although the elections are officially being conducted on a non-party basis, several political parties are reportedly extending indirect support to their preferred candidates. In many areas, more than one candidate backed by the same political group is in the fray, making the electoral contest more complex.
The CPI(M) has appealed to urban voters to reject divisive politics and support candidates who uphold communal harmony, unity, and secular values. The party emphasized that urban local bodies play a crucial role in ensuring sanitation, safe drinking water, public health services, education, road construction, and other essential civic amenities.
According to the party, many urban areas continue to struggle with issues such as heaps of garbage, clogged drains, and mosquito menace. It also raised concerns over the condition of temporary sanitation workers. Voters have been urged to prioritize development, transparency, and public welfare while exercising their franchise.
