Republic Day: Ravindra Nath Mahato Calls for Commitment to Constitution and Democracy

Ranchi:A dignified program was organized at the Jharkhand Legislative Assembly on the occasion of the 77th Republic Day. Addressing the gathering, Assembly Speaker Mr. Ravindra Nath Mahato extended greetings to the present legislators, former members, secretariat officials, staff, media representatives, and children.

In his address, Mr. Mahato said that 26 January is not merely a festival, but a historic day marking the implementation of the Constitution of India. On this day, India established itself as a sovereign, socialist, secular, and democratic republic.

He stated that with the enforcement of the Constitution on 26 January 1950, the people of India gained the right to shape their own future. This freedom was achieved after a long struggle and countless sacrifices. The freedom fighters had envisioned an India based on justice, equality, liberty, and fraternity, values that are enshrined in the Constitution.

The Speaker emphasized that Indian democracy is not limited to any single ideology or class. Democratic traditions have been part of India’s ancient culture. He said the Constitution was framed through extensive discussions, debates, and consensus, reflecting the unity of the country’s diversity.

Referring to Dr. B.R. Ambedkar, Mr. Mahato said that while India achieved political equality after independence, social and economic inequalities still remain and must be addressed continuously.

Recalling Jharkhand’s contribution to the freedom struggle, he paid tribute to great leaders such as Tilka Manjhi, Sidho-Kanhu, Phulo-Jhano, Nilambar-Pitambar, Buddhu Bhagat, Sheikh Bhikhari, and Birsa Munda.

He noted that after independence, India faced several challenges including poverty, illiteracy, social inequality, and limited resources. Despite these challenges, the country strengthened its democratic institutions and moved steadily on the path of development under the guidance of the Constitution.

Mr. Mahato said that today India has made remarkable progress in the fields of economy, science and technology, space research, digital innovation, and diplomacy. However, development is meaningful only when its benefits reach the last person in society.

He clarified that constitutional provisions such as social justice, equal opportunity, and reservation are not against any group, but are meant to bring marginalized and deprived communities into the mainstream.

Concluding his address, he said that it is the collective responsibility of all citizens to uphold constitutional values not just in words, but in practice. This, he said, is the true spirit of Republic Day.

He extended heartfelt greetings to all on the occasion of Republic Day.
Jai Hind.
Jai Jharkhand.
