Ranchi/New Delhi:The Polit Bureau of the Communist Party of India (Marxist) issued a strong statement on January 5, sharply criticising the Modi government’s stance on Venezuela. The party said that the BJP-led government’s response to the open military attack by the United States on Venezuela and the abduction of President Nicolás Maduro and his wife by U.S. armed forces is extremely weak, cowardly, and condemnable.
According to the CPI(M), this position is completely contrary to India’s long-standing foreign policy, which has traditionally upheld the principles of national independence and sovereignty. The party alleged that the statement issued by the Ministry of External Affairs merely expressed “deep concern over developments in Venezuela” and called for “dialogue to ensure peace and stability in the region,” but failed to utter even a single word condemning this grave violation of the United Nations Charter and
international law.
The Polit Bureau pointed out that even some European allies of the United States have referred to and criticised the attack and abduction in their statements, while the Indian government has chosen to remain silent. The CPI(M) further noted that India’s stance is completely different from that of its BRICS partners, Brazil and South Africa, which have strongly and unequivocally condemned the U.S. attack and demanded the immediate release of President Maduro and his wife.
The CPI(M) accused the Modi government of adopting a pro-U.S. posture in line with its right-wing ideology and its strategic alignment with the U.S. establishment. The party said that by taking this stand, India has weakened its claims of representing the interests of the developing world and the Global South.
The CPI(M) demanded that the Modi government abandon this shameful position and clearly and unequivocally oppose the U.S. attack and its illegal actions in Venezuela.
