Ranchi: Left parties held protest demonstrations across Ranchi and several other districts of Jharkhand against the alleged abduction of Venezuela’s elected President Nicolás Maduro and his wife. In Ranchi, activists of the Left parties gathered at Albert Ekka Chowk and raised slogans against American imperialism and the policies of former US President Donald Trump, expressing solidarity with Venezuela.
The protesters accused the United States of openly violating international laws and the United Nations Charter. The Left parties stated that such action against the democratically elected president of a sovereign nation poses a serious threat to democratic values worldwide.
Addressing the gathering, CPI(M) State Secretary Prakash Viplav said that the action taken by the United States amounts to an act of terrorism and is a blatant violation of the UN Charter and international law. He added that it is extremely worrying and unfortunate that the Government of India has not taken a clear stand in support of Venezuela on this serious issue.
Subhendu Sen of CPI(ML) said that imperialist forces are continuously conspiring to overthrow democratically elected governments, and the US action against Venezuela is a direct attack on global democracy.
Ajay Singh of CPI stated that such policies are not new for the United States, which has long been attempting to undermine the sovereignty of Latin American countries. The action against Venezuela’s president, he said, is part of the same imperialist strategy.
Speaking at the rally, filmmaker Meghnath said that cultural and intellectual communities must also come forward against imperialism, as the abduction of a democratic leader is a direct assault on human rights.
Social activist Father Tony said that a country which claims to stand for peace, justice, and human rights is itself violating international laws, exposing its double standards.
Dipti Minz said that pressuring and destabilizing governments of weaker and developing nations is a hallmark of imperialist politics, and broad public unity is essential to resist it.
Afzal Anis emphasized that ordinary citizens must raise their voices against international injustice and that this movement by the Left parties would strengthen people-oriented struggles.
The protest was attended by Virendra Kumar, Sukhnath Lohra, S.K. Rai, along with members of student organizations AISA and SFI and trade unions CITU, AITUC, and ACTU. The meeting was presided over by Nandita Bhattacharya.
The Left parties announced that a comprehensive meeting will be held on January 11, after which a large-scale citizens’ march will be organized in Ranchi to further intensify the movement against American imperialism.
