Taking the Sick to Hospital Becomes a Challenge, Demand for Underpass Grows

Ranchi / Tori Junction/Chandwa ::For the residents of Bhandargarha village, located across the Tori railway line, taking a sick person to the hospital has become a major challenge. Due to the absence of an underpass, villagers are forced to carry patients on makeshift stretchers and cross the railway tracks, putting lives at constant risk.

A recent incident on Monday highlights the severity of the situation. Goinda Ganjhu, a resident of Bhandargarha village under Bhusad gram panchayat, suddenly fell seriously ill. His family arranged a stretcher (khatia) to take him to the Community Health Centre. As there is no proper access road to the village, several villagers gathered and carried the patient on foot.

The 108 ambulance, which was called for emergency assistance, could not reach the village due to the lack of a road and was forced to stop on the other side of the railway line near railway pole numbers 182/28 and 182/29, between Tori Junction (East) and

Tori–Mahuamilan station, close to the Bhandargarha–Parsahi area. The patient was then carried across the railway tracks on a stretcher and handed over to the ambulance.

Panchayat Samiti member Ayub Khan stated that there is no alternative route to reach the village. People traveling on this route constantly face the risk of accidents, as villagers are compelled to cross the railway tracks daily.

He further added that Bhandargarha village is surrounded by railway lines on all sides and has been completely cut off from proper road connectivity. As a result, even critically ill patients like Goinda Ganjhu have to be carried on stretchers across the railway tracks to reach medical facilities.

Villagers had hoped that an underpass would be constructed when the railway line was expanded, but this did not happen. During the monsoon season, the village turns into an isolated island, worsening the situation. The failure of the railway authorities to construct an underpass has created serious hardships for the residents. The absence of an underbridge on the only route connecting Parsahi and Bhandargarha has affected hundreds of villagers from several surrounding villages who depend on this path for daily movement.

It was reported that even before independence, people have been using this route on foot to travel to schools, colleges, towns, markets, and nearby villages such as Tilaiyadamar, Turi Sont, Marmar, Phultand, Lohsingna, Mahuamilan, Piprahi, and Bhandargarha. Demanding the construction of an underbridge at this location, farmers have been staging continuous protests under the leadership of Panchayat Samiti member Ayub Khan. Memorandums have been submitted to officials several times, but no concrete action has been taken so far.

Ayub Khan has appealed to the Railway General Manager and the Dhanbad Divisional Railway Manager (DRM) to ensure the construction of an underpass at the earliest, so that villagers can get relief and the risk of serious accidents can be avoided in the future.
