Priya Ranjan Inaugurates Mechanised Sludge Utilisation System at BSL

Bokaro Steel Plant (BSL) commissioned a Mechanised Decanter Sludge Charging System at its Coal Chemical complex, marking a key step toward sustainable and efficient operations. The facility was inaugurated by Executive Director (Works) Priya Ranjan, in the presence of Executive Director (Operations) Anup Kumar Dutta and senior officials.

The programme was attended by the Chief General Manager (CO&CC), senior executives, departmental heads, engineers, and members of the project team.

The newly introduced system enables the scientific reuse of tar decanter sludge, earlier disposed of as hazardous waste, by blending it into the coke-making process. This circular economy initiative reduces dependence on virgin coal while converting waste into a valuable resource.

The fully mechanised, in-house developed system enhances safety, improves process control, and minimizes environmental risks linked to manual handling, transportation, and landfill disposal. The initiative is expected to deliver cost savings, lower carbon emissions, and strengthen BSL’s Environmental, Social, and Governance (ESG) performance.

Speaking on the occasion, Priya Ranjan highlighted that such innovations underline BSL’s commitment to sustainability, operational excellence, and responsible resource management.
