Education Is Not Just for Livelihood, but for Building Responsible Citizens: Governor

Ranchi: The Hon’ble Governor-cum-Chancellor of Universities of Jharkhand, Shri Santosh Kumar Gangwar, said that the purpose of education is not merely to earn a livelihood, but to create sensitive, responsible, and duty-conscious citizens. He was addressing the 10th Convocation Ceremony of Vinoba Bhave University, Hazaribagh, on Tuesday.

Congratulating the students and research scholars who received their degrees, the Governor said that a convocation ceremony is not just a formal event for awarding degrees, but a symbol of students’ hard work, discipline, patience, and continuous dedication. It marks the completion of an important chapter of life and the beginning of a new one. He emphasized that the knowledge, values, and  (ethical grounding) gained from the university must now be used for the greater good of society and the nation.

The Governor noted that Vinoba Bhave University is named after Saint Vinoba Bhave, the pioneer of the Bhoodan Movement, who dedicated his entire life to social reform. He urged students to keep these values alive through their conduct and actions.

Referring to the goals of “Viksit Bharat @2047” and an “Atmanirbhar and Empowered India,” the Governor called upon the youth to contribute honestly, diligently, and ethically to nation-building. He said education should not remain limited to personal growth alone, but must extend to social responsibility. If every educated youth takes responsibility for the education of even one child, illiteracy can be eliminated automatically, he added.

Describing universities as centers of

ideas, character, and consciousness

the Governor stressed the need to further strengthen academic quality, research socialengagement, and placement systems. He also emphasized making placement centers more effective in

 the interest of students.

Highlighting the National Education Policy–2020, the Governor said it is a significant step toward making education inclusive, value-based, and socially relevant. Through this policy, the new generation is being made aware not only

of opportunities but also of responsibilities, enabling them to play an active role in building a strong and self-reliant India.

The Governor advised students to always remember that their identity is defined not by their degrees, but by their actions. Success and failure are both natural parts of life, but those who learn from failure and move forward achieve lasting success. He expressed hope that wherever the students go, they will bring pride to their university, families, and the nation through their knowledge, conduct, and spirit of service.
Earlier, upon arriving at the Vinoba Bhave University campus, the Governor paid floral tributes at the statue of Saint Vinoba Bhave, the pioneer of the Bhoodan Movement.
