Kerala Creates History, Becomes the First State in India to Eradicate Extreme Poverty

Ranchi, November 1: The Left Democratic Front (LDF) government of Kerala has created history by making the state completely free from extreme poverty — not only in India but across South Asia. With this remarkable achievement, Kerala has set a new benchmark for social justice and inclusive development.

After the Central Government dissolved the Planning Commission and established the NITI Aayog, the latter’s 2021 report revealed that only 0.7 percent of Kerala’s population lived below the poverty line. In this backdrop, the CPI(M)-led LDF government, which came to power in 2021, made it a priority in its very first cabinet meeting to eliminate extreme poverty from the state.

A scientific and inclusive survey was carried out to identify 64,006 extremely poor families across Kerala. These families were those struggling to meet their basic needs — food, health, livelihood, and housing. Based on the survey, a micro-plan was prepared, and through active participation of government machinery, volunteers, and the public, the target was achieved by conducting continuous social audits.

At a large public event held in
Thiruvananthapuram, Kerala Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan formally declared the state as “free from extreme poverty.”

CPI(M) State Secretary Prakash Viplav congratulated the people of Kerala and the Left Democratic Front government on this historic achievement. He stated, “The Kerala model has shown the nation that with people’s participation and strong political will, it is possible to eradicate poverty.”

Kerala’s success stands as an inspiring example for other Indian states. Today, Kerala continues to lead the nation in education, healthcare, employment, the Panchayati Raj system, cooperatives, MGNREGA work generation, tourism, and good governance.
