In Odisha, widespread resentment has erupted among local communities after the administration allegedly attempted to stop a programme organised by Ma Maati Maali Suraksha Manch (Rayagada–Kalahandi) on the occasion of the birth anniversary of the great Adivasi freedom fighter, Birsa Munda. The platform has been actively opposing the proposed bauxite mining projects of Vedanta and Adani.
According to reports, heavy police force was deployed across the area to disrupt the event, which was scheduled to take place in Nakrundi Panchayat of Kalahandi district. Sanu Majhi of Aamjhola village was detained for several hours, while Mithun Naik of Kachlekha village was arrested and sent to Rayagada Jail.
Local residents allege that this action reflects a coordinated attempt by the government, administration, and mining companies to suppress the voices of Adivasi and Dalit communities. They also point out the irony that while the Central Government issued a commemorative stamp and coin on Birsa Munda’s 150th birth anniversary last year, those wishing to celebrate him this year are facing state repression.
People in the region have reportedly faced similar harassment while celebrating World Environment Day, World Adivasi Day, and even during this year’s Birsa Munda Jayanti. Community leaders claim that such actions are part of a broader effort by the state and corporate interests to gain control over Fifth Schedule areas.
Despite the venue being shifted and attempts by company supporters to create disruptions, hundreds of villagers—particularly women—celebrated Birsa Munda Jayanti with great enthusiasm and reaffirmed their commitment to protecting their land, forests, and water.
Adivasi and Dalit organisations have declared that their struggle will continue.
