BSL develops special-grade electrical steel for EVs and large motors

Bokaro Steel Plant (BSL) under SAIL has achieved a major milestone by successfully developing a special grade of non-grain oriented electrical steel conforming to IS:18316 standards, used in electric vehicles, large motors, and generators. In its first trial, BSL produced 1,100 tonnes of this high-grade steel.

Only a few countries have the capability to produce such advanced material, which was earlier largely imported. This success is being seen as a major step toward Aatmanirbhar Bharat and Make in India.

The steel is produced through complex metallurgical processes with controlled carbon and high silicon content to achieve the desired magnetic and mechanical properties. It is hot-rolled in the Hot Strip Mill and further cold-rolled in CRM-3 to 0.5 mm precision sheets with superior surface finish and consistent magnetic behavior.

The steel will be used mainly in electric motors, generators, and hybrid and electric vehicles. Initial customer trials have shown complete satisfaction in terms of quality and performance, establishing BSL’s product as market-ready.

This achievement reinforces BSL’s commitment to innovation, quality excellence, and import substitution, further strengthening its role in India’s industrial and economic growth.
