50 Years of MKM Stadium: Bokaro’s Sporting Landmark Enters a New Era

Mohan Kumar Mangalam Stadium, the heart of Bokaro’s sporting culture, stepped into its 50th year on 21 November, celebrating a journey that began in 1975 when the newly built steel city was still finding its identity. Inaugurated by BSL’s then MD K. C. Khanna, the 40,000-seat arena quickly became the city’s strongest link to national-level sports.

From hosting the Bokaro Steel Football Cup to organising a rare 1980 international match between Russia’s Cosmos Club and BSF, the stadium has long been a stage for memorable contests. It also nurtured stars like Olympian Peter Thangaraj, Commonwealth Games gold medallist Pratima Kumari and Asian medallist J. Burman under the guidance of seasoned BSL coaches.

The golden jubilee celebration began with BSL Executive Director (HR) Rajashree Banerjee releasing a balloon to mark the moment. Former players, athletes and sports staff were honoured for shaping the stadium’s legacy.

As MKM Stadium enters its next chapter, the jubilee stands as a reminder of its role in Bokaro’s growth—and a promise of new sporting milestones ahead.
