Ranchi :: Sadar Hospital, located in the capital city of Jharkhand, Ranchi, has achieved yet another historic milestone in the field of medicine. For the first time, the hospital’s laparoscopic surgery department successfully performed a gallbladder stone surgery on the left side of a patient. The case involved an extremely rare medical condition known as “Complete Situs Inversus,” in which the internal organs of the human body are positioned in a mirror image of their normal arrangement. This condition occurs in only one out of every 10,000 to 20,000 individuals.
The patient, Mrs. B. Bara, a resident of Inta Chindrari village under Bero police station (Ranchi) and currently living in Morabadi, had been suffering from severe abdominal pain for the past two to three months. Medical investigations revealed that she was suffering from acute pancreatitis. Further tests showed the presence of multiple stones in her gallbladder, which was unusually located on the left side instead of the right.
ECHO and CT scan confirmed that the patient had Complete Situs Inversus — meaning her heart was positioned on the right side and other internal organs were also reversed from their normal positions. This made the surgery particularly complex, as the surgeon had to operate from the opposite direction, which is technically very challenging.
The operation was successfully led by Dr. Ajit Kumar, an Advanced Laparoscopic Surgeon, along with his dedicated team. The team included Anesthetists Dr. Vasudha Gupta and Dr. Vikas Ballabh, Nursing Staff Sister Sneh Lata, and OT Staff members Sandeep, Santosh, Srishti, Suresh, Aman, Viranjan, Kalpana, and Nandini, all of whom played a crucial role in the procedure.
The Sadar Hospital administration stated that this success further strengthens the hospital’s quality of medical services and surgical excellence. The achievement stands as a testament to the growing capabilities of government hospitals in the state and will serve as an inspiration for handling complex surgical cases in the future.
The patient’s husband, Mr. Joseph Oraon, a farmer by profession, expressed his heartfelt gratitude to Dr. Ajit Kumar and the entire hospital team. He shared that the entire treatment was carried out completely free of cost under the Ayushman Bharat Scheme, for which he thanked both the government and the hospital administration.
