Protest Against Suppression of Ladakh Youth Rights and Arrest of Sonam Wangchuk

Ranchi: Today, at Albert Ekka Chowk, various organizations and citizens strongly condemned the central government’s suppression in Ladakh and the arrest of Sonam Wangchuk under the National Security Act (NSA). They demanded that Leh-Ladakh be immediately granted full statehood.

The government’s actions are fueling anger and separatist sentiment in the region. Recent youth protests have resulted in the tragic deaths of four individuals and injuries to hundreds more, highlighting the gravity of the situation. Experts and activists say the government’s disregard for public demands and labeling them as “anti-national” is aimed at protecting corporate interests while ignoring local concerns.

Similar to the youth in Jharkhand fighting for their identity, land, and employment, the indigenous youth of Ladakh are struggling for their rights to recognition, resources, and dignity. The arrest of Sonam Wangchuk and the allegations against him are escalating separatism and unrest in the region.

The demands of Ladakh are not merely political; they are also linked to environmental and life preservation. The Himalayan glaciers are at risk from large-scale industrial projects. Implementing the Sixth Schedule of the Constitution will allow the local indigenous population to control their land, resources, and employment. Full statehood will ensure their participation in parliamentary representation and allow them to determine their own future.

Key Demands:

1. Immediate release of Sonam Wangchuk and unconditional withdrawal of NSA charges.

2. Immediate granting of full statehood to Leh-Ladakh.

3. Implementation of the Sixth Schedule in Ladakh to protect local rights and the environment.

4. Conduct a high-level judicial inquiry into the deaths and injuries during recent violence.
