Postage Stamp on RSS: An Insult to the Indian Constitution – CPI(M)

Ranchi :: The Polit Bureau of the Communist Party of India (Marxist) has issued a statement condemning the release of a postage stamp and a ₹100 commemorative coin by the Prime Minister on the occasion of the centenary of the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS). The CPI(M) described this act as a grave affront and a direct insult to the Indian Constitution, which the RSS has never accepted.

According to the party, it is highly objectionable that the officially issued coin bears the same image of Bharat Mata that the RSS promotes as the emblem of its communal concept of a “Hindutva Rashtra.” Likewise, depicting uniformed RSS volunteers on the postage stamp as participants in the 1963 Republic Day Parade is a blatant distortion of history.

The Polit Bureau pointed out that it is falsely claimed that during the India-China war, Prime Minister Jawaharlal Nehru recognized the patriotic contribution of the RSS and invited its volunteers to the Republic Day Parade. In reality, evidence shows that the 1963 Republic Day celebration was essentially a massive citizens’ assembly attended by over one lakh people. If uniformed RSS volunteers were present, their role was neither reported nor central in any way.

Distance from Freedom Struggle, Collaboration with the British

The CPI(M) asserted that this entire exercise is an attempt to whitewash the RSS’s shameful history. Far from being part of the freedom movement, the RSS in fact strengthened the British colonial policy of “divide and rule.” By doing so, it weakened the unity of the Indian people, which was the decisive force in the struggle against colonial rule.

Role in Communal Violence

Independent India has witnessed some of the worst incidents of communal violence, in which the role of the RSS has been repeatedly documented by official inquiry commissions. Even today, the RSS and its affiliated organizations continue to target minority communities and marginalized sections of society by promoting the regressive Manuvadi ideology.

Prime Minister Accused of Misusing Office

The party further stated that by misusing his constitutional position to glorify the RSS’s distorted history, the Prime Minister has not only insulted the spirit of the Constitution but has also diminished the dignity of his high office.
