Violence in Ladakh: CPI(M) Strongly Condemns Government’s Repression

Ranchi: The Communist Party of India (Marxist) has strongly condemned the brutal repression of the people of Ladakh by the administration of the Union Territory under the central government. Four people have died, and several others have been injured in this violent action.

For the past six years, the people of Ladakh have been demanding full statehood and inclusion of the region under the Sixth Schedule of the Constitution. This would provide them constitutional safeguards similar to those enjoyed by people in several northeastern states and benefit the general public. The BJP-led central government has consistently ignored these legitimate demands.

After three years of neglect and unsuccessful dialogue, the Leh Apex Body (LAB) and other public organizations undertook a 15-day peaceful hunger strike. Despite this non-violent protest, the central government chose to arrest the protesters, spreading widespread unrest and opposition in the region.

The CPI(M) has urged the central government to immediately stop all repressive measures and engage in meaningful dialogue with the representatives of the movement. The party has also demanded adequate compensation for the families of those who lost their lives and for the injured.
