Ranchi, Sept 1: Responding to a nationwide call by the All India Central Council of Trade Unions (AICCTU), a powerful protest was organized today at the historic Albert Ekka Chowk in Ranchi. The demonstration was held in strong opposition to the United States' decision—under the Trump administration—to impose up to 50% tariffs on Indian export products.
Trade union leaders stated that these tariff hikes are having a devastating impact on India’s industrial sectors, resulting in massive layoffs, wage reductions, and a sharp decline in working conditions for laborers across the country.
The protest saw active participation from dozens of workers belonging to the Jharkhand Nirman Mazdoor Union. The event was led by senior trade union leader Gopal Sharan Singh, who was joined by prominent activists including Bhim Sahu, Ramesh Ravi, Mohammad Naseem, Enamul, Shubhendu Sen, Manju Devi, and Raju Mahato.
In a fiery address, Mr. Singh remarked:
“This tariff imposition is not just a trade war—it is a direct assault on the livelihoods of Indian workers. Bowing down to America's oppressive policies is equivalent to pushing our labor force into economic slavery.”
The protestors criticized the silence of the central government and accused it of siding with multinational corporate interests at the expense of Indian workers. They demanded immediate government intervention to safeguard employment and industrial stability.
Protesters called on the central government to:
Reject the U.S. tariff policies
Provide relief packages for affected workers and industries
Protect domestic employment through policy reforms
Manju Devi, representing the women’s wing of the Construction Workers’ Union, highlighted the gendered impact of the crisis.
“Women laborers are being hit the hardest. Our jobs are vanishing, and the government must stop catering only to big industrialists. It's time they listen to the real backbone of the economy—the workers.”
Union leaders issued a stern warning: if the government fails to take decisive and protective action, they will launch nationwide protests and awareness campaigns in the coming weeks.
Today’s protest, though centered in Ranchi, is seen as the beginning of a larger, national movement to challenge both foreign economic aggression and the government’s inaction
