Ranchi: The second Jharkhand State-Level three-day Bone Marrow Transplant Screening and Awareness Camp for Thalassemia and Sickle Cell Anemia patients was organized at the Ranchi Press Club.
The camp was jointly conducted by the “Lahoo Bolega” Blood Donation Organization and the Jharkhand Thalassemia Patients Association, with support from Indraprastha Apollo Hospital, New Delhi, and the Shonit Foundation.
Essential HLA screening tests required for bone marrow transplantation were carried out during the camp. In the first two days, a total of 137 patients and their family members from Jharkhand, Bihar, West Bengal, and Odisha underwent free medical screening.
The inaugural session was attended by former Union Minister and former MP Subodhkant Sahay, who stressed the need to increase awareness about serious blood disorders.
Renowned bone marrow transplant specialist Dr. Gaurav Kharia, Director at Apollo Hospital, New Delhi, said that bone marrow transplantation is a permanent cure for Thalassemia and timely donor matching can save lives.
CPI (ML) Jharkhand State Secretary Manoj Bhakt highlighted the importance of ensuring healthcare access for all sections of society. Shonit Foundation Chairman A.K. Jha said the foundation aims to provide transplant facilities at minimal or no cost.
During the second session, 36 patients were provided free power spectacles, while ASG Eye Hospital distributed coupons for free consultation and treatment.
On the second day, CRC Ranchi Director Suryamani Prasad and senior physiotherapist Dr. Uma Sen Gupta guided families on long-term care and rehabilitation needs.
Organizers also shared that in the previous camp held in October 2025, bone marrow matches were found for 29 patients, and further procedures are underway.
The program was chaired by blood donor leader Nadeem Khan, who reiterated the mission to ensure that no child in Jharkhand suffers due to lack of treatment.
