Ranchi, February 28: All India Students’ Association (AISA) observed an All India Protest Day on Friday, staging a demonstration at Albert Ekka Chowk in Ranchi. The protestors demanded the release of 14 students of Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU) who have been lodged in Tihar Jail following recent police action on campus.
The demonstrators also called for a judicial inquiry by the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) into the alleged incidents, including the suspension of student leaders and the police crackdown. In addition, AISA demanded a CBI probe into the suspicious deaths of a tribal B.Com student of Usha Martin University and a tribal MBBS student in Bhopal.
Addressing the gathering, AISA Ranchi district president Vijay Kumar demanded the immediate release of the detained students and accountability from the university administration. He alleged that the government was adopting an anti-student approach and urged wider solidarity on the issue.
District secretary Sanjana Mehta said that thousands of students, responding to a call by the JNUSU, had marched towards the Ministry of Education demanding revocation of the suspension of four office-bearers and the former president, resignation of the Vice-Chancellor, and effective implementation of UGC equity regulations. She alleged that the police detained the protesters and sent 14 students to Tihar Jail. Despite being granted bail by the court, they were not released on the pretext of address verification, she claimed.
Among those present at the protest were Sohel Ansari, Piyush Kumar, Sonu Kumar, Nandita Bhattacharya, R.N. Singh and other members of the organisation.
