Sandeep Poundrik, IAS, Secretary, Ministry of Steel, Government of India, called upon SAIL’s mines collective to intensify efforts towards achieving 100 MTPA iron ore production by 2031, during an interaction with executives of the Odisha and Jharkhand Groups of Mines at Rourkela Steel Plant.
The session was attended by Amarendu Prakash, Chairman and Managing Director, SAIL, along with senior officials from the Ministry of Steel and SAIL. Highlighting the Government of India’s thrust on expanding domestic steel capacity, the Secretary said the resulting surge in iron ore demand presents a strategic opportunity for SAIL to scale up production through enhanced efficiency, optimal utilisation of mineralised areas and adoption of advanced mining technologies.
CMD SAIL Amarendu Prakash emphasised that strong intent backed by clear planning is key to delivering ambitious outcomes. Vikas Manwati, ED (JGoM), made a detailed presentation on SAIL’s preparedness, risks and the roadmap for the 100 MTPA target. The Secretary reviewed mine-wise performance, discussed key bottlenecks and stressed the need to fast-track project implementation to meet future requirements.
The interaction also provided a platform for open dialogue between the Ministry and field executives, enabling a comprehensive review of operational challenges and future expansion plans. The Secretary (Steel) encouraged continuous coordination across mines and plants to build a resilient and sustainable mining ecosystem that can support SAIL’s long-term growth and India’s rising steel ambitions.
