Ranchi: Demanding the enactment of a strict law against caste-based discrimination on campuses and the implementation of UGC guidelines on the lines of the Rohith Act in all higher educational institutions, the All India Students’ Association (AISA) held a protest demonstration in Ranchi. On the occasion, an All-India protest programme was organised after paying floral tribute at the
statue of Birsa Munda.
Addressing the gathering, former JNU President Comrade Dhananjay said that AISA welcomes the UGC Regulations, 2026 for the Promotion of Equity in Higher Educational Institutions, but at the same time strongly demands that concrete and effective guidelines on the lines of the Rohith Act be implemented in all higher educational institutions, including engineering and medical colleges. He also called for the enactment of a stringent law against caste-based discrimination on campuses.
He termed it shameful and condemnable that the Supreme Court has put a stay by claiming that caste-based oppression no longer exists on campuses. Referring to the institutional killings of Rohith Vemula, Payal Tadvi and Darshan Solanki, he said that students dropping out of studies and committing suicide continues to be a serious social crisis.
AISA Jharkhand State President Vibha Pushpa Deep said that despite fulfilling all academic criteria, students are being excluded by citing “NFS (No Suitable Candidate Found),” which directly and adversely affects students from Scheduled Castes, Scheduled Tribes and Other Backward Classes.
Meanwhile, State Secretary Trilokinath stated that along with caste discrimination, racial discrimination is also still prevalent on campuses. Referring to the recent killing of Angel Chakma, he said that she was beaten to death after being mistaken for someone of Chinese origin. He appealed to justice-loving people from all communities to support the enactment of strict laws and to run widespread awareness campaigns.
Students of AISA from various universities across Jharkhand, including Sneha Mahto, Ritesh Mishra, Vijay Kumar, Sanjana Mehta, Jayjeet Mukherjee and Sushil Murmu, were present in large numbers during the protest.
